There’s no doubt about it, we’re self-admitted tech junkies at the Carbonated headquarters. Today’s advanced tech gizmos and gadgets make our lives easier, clutter decorate our desks and drawers, and offer great show and tell opportunities at social gatherings. Curious about what nifty devices we’ve grown attached to? Here’s a roundup of some of our favourites:

Lauren:

I’m currently having a pretty intense love affair with my Android phone, a Samsung Galaxy Infuse. I’d have to say its best feature is its huge screen. I use it as my alarm clock, phone book, grocery list, calendar, Facebook on the go, weather checker and camera (it has an 8MP camera). Sometimes, believe it or not, I even use it to make phone calls!

Geoff:

Kris brought in his indoor RC helicopter for me to try out recently and I’ve been hooked on these little toys ever since. I’ve been honing my piloting skills daily and terrorizing everyone else in the office, testing myself with challenges like landing it on a pile of tablets or flying it up a case of stairs. I just upgraded to a helicopter that shoots missiles! Good thing there’s no license required…

Kris:

I’m a big fan of my LaCrosse Technology BC-900 battery charger. It isn’t as fancy as most tech gadgets these days, but it performs the simple and fundamental task of charging your batteries. I love the control I have with the device. I can view battery conditions on its LCD readout, charge individual cells at different rates simultaneously, and restore worn out batteries to near-new conditions. Because of this charger, I regularly use the same batteries that were powering my electronic gadgets in the 1980s! Now that’s real lasting power.

Brad:

My favourite tech gadget would have to be my iPhone. I know, big surprise, right? I take it with me everywhere I go, and with such a wide variety of apps at my immediate disposal, it can prove to be quite handy at times. The things you can do are pretty limitless. Whenever I find myself thinking there is no possible way to discover, hear or watch something when I’m away from my computer, I just remember “oh yeah, there’s probably an app for that”.

Dean:

My current preferred tech gadget is my Playstation Vita. It has an awesome OLED touch-screen along with some of the coolest games on the market. It’s so convenient to be able to leave the house with up to 20 of my favorite games on one device and it really does make for endless entertainment. The only problem is that I seem to have lost all control over how many games I’m buying! They make it too easy.

Filipe:

Although I have a number of favourite tech gadgets on my roster, I’d have to say I’m most addicted to my iPhone. I like to think of myself as a phone aficionado of sorts. I’m always pleasantly surprised by just how far along the technology has come in recent years. Whether going for a run or taking a long bus ride, I’m always connected to the world. I can be checking my calendar, listening to some great tunes or catching up on the news. No matter what I need, my phone is up to the job!

What’s your favourite tech gadget and why? We’d love to hear about them!

Whether you were stoked or disappointed when you heard that Facebook would be rolling out its Timeline design to all users, there’s certainly no escaping it now. Despite the protests lodged by some Facebook users about the new layout, Timeline does offer some awesome customizability. Here are some of the radical changes you should know about to make the most of your changed profile design:

Cover Photos

Facebook profile pages now include an 851 x 315 cover photo. If you don’t upload or select one, the area will simply remain empty. Guidelines and regulations for cover photos can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=276329115767498

As a rule of thumb, cover photos cannot include the following:

Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”

Contact information such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section

References to user interface elements such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features

Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”

Pinning

Now you can pin a post to the top of your page, even if it’s not the most recent post on your profile. For business owners, this is an ideal way to keep relevant information, promotions and contests in clear view.

Highlighting

You also now have the ability to select a post to “highlight”. Highlighting is different from pinning, as it will allow a post to take up the entire width of your wall. This feature offers a great way to gain extra attention from viewers.

Tabs

They will now appear below your cover photo with thumbnail images. You can’t select a default tab, as your page will automatically go to your timeline.

Messages

Fans are now able to send you private messages!

Have you embraced the new Facebook Timeline layout? Why or why not?

These days, there’s a lot of buzz around location based apps. Now you can check in with friends, plan local meet-ups, and share your experiences through photos and comments.

While most of us are familiar with Foursquare, numerous others are gaining popularity. In fact, a number of new location based apps made appearances at SXSW 2012, an annual Trade Show connecting leaders in the Music, Film and Interactive Industries http://sxsw.com/

Here are some you might want to check out:

Forecast

Unlike Foursquare which allows you to tell your friends where you are at a specific moment, this app asks you to ‘forecast’ where you’re going to be at a planned time. Then just check-in when you arrive in case your friends want to meet up with you!

Highlight

This app doesn’t just let you know who is around you, but it also lets you access their profiles and learn more about them. If another Highlight user is nearby, you can pull up their profile on your phone and check out if you have any shared interests that could make good conversation starters.

Local Mind

This app is a location based Q&A app for iPhone which New York Times calls “the future of local crowdsourcing”. Send out questions to places of interest like your favourite bars or restaurants and get real time responses from people who are already at the scene.

Sonar App

This app uncovers hidden connections by taking relevant data from Foursquare, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to let you who is nearby and how you’re connected.

Zaarley

This app is a location based mobile market and gives you awesome opportunities to buy and sell both products and services with the people around you. It really puts community commerce into action!

Banjo

This app for iPhone and Android connects your Foursquare, Twitter and Facebook accounts so you can be notified when friends are nearby, let people know where you’re at, and see what your friends are talking about. This app is a location based mobile market and gives you awesome opportunities to buy and sell both products and services with the people around you. It really puts community commerce into action!

Let us know if you give any of them a whirl! We’d love to know which location based social apps you found simple and fun to use.

Have you ever wondered what kind of fizz fuels the Carbonated team? If you’ve made a visit to our office, we bet you already know, although we certainly like to think our recycling bin overflowing with Coca-Cola cans adds to our décor.

We can’t deny our love affair with Coca-Cola. However, for some of us, it’s something else that keeps us going throughout the work day. Here’s what each of our team members had to say about their caffeinated beverage of choice:

Geoff:

“My caffeinated beverage of choice is coffee. I have a love-hate relationship with coffee because I don’t actually like the taste of it, but it’s become a crutch that keeps me focused and working at the computer. With a hot cup of coffee nearby, I can work for hours on end. At our old office, I was a Starbucks addict, but when we moved to the new office we finally had room for a coffee maker. Now a fresh cup of coffee is only a few feet away making it even more convenient to feed my addiction. I also used to drink a lot of Red Rain, a cheap Red Bull knock-off that you can buy by the case at Costco. I’ve since kicked that habit in favour of more coffee! I’m not sure if that counts as progress or not…”

Brad:

“Coca-Cola is definitely my standby drink. I think it’s because I prefer Coca-Cola branding to their competitors. It’s ageless and identifiable. I like to think that 5000 years into the future, it’ll still have its original brand mark. But it could just be the caffeine I’m addicted to, who knows?”

Dean:

“The caffeinated beverage I drink most often is definitely Coca-Cola and most people would tell you I drink an unhealthy amount. If I ever find vanilla or cherry flavored varieties, I buy as much of it as I can carry. I also like Jones green apple soda, but it’s usually too hard to find. I briefly tried to switch to coffee to satisfy my caffeine cravings, but I never liked the taste. I’ve always had strong suspicions that my caffeine addiction started in my early years when my parents would buy me a Coca-Cola for each home run I hit. I blame them entirely. Let’s just say it quickly got out of hand and I’ve been drinking Coca-Cola ever since.”

Lauren:

“I enjoy tea. I’m always feeling chilly so I like having a warm beverage on hand, but I don’t like the taste of coffee. I love the variety I get with tea, although my default choice is Orange Pekoe. I’ve been known to drink 4-5 cups of tea a day. If it didn’t cost a small fortune, I’d opt for Starbucks Chai Lattes all day long (extra hot please!).”

Kris:

“My caffeinated beverage of choice is Diet Coke. To some, it’s on par with pickled-egg juice. I admit, Diet Coke is definitely an acquired taste, but I enjoy the mild sweetness, strong effervescence and modest caffeine perk. The caffeine level is just right. There’s no enduring the symptoms of withdrawal that come with being committed to a regular injection of caffeine delivered from an artisan coffee with a name that can’t be memorized without practice.”

Mobile applications have revolutionized the way we exchange online information and do business, and their popularity is only on the rise. The recent statistics on the growth of mobile app consumption have been staggering. ComScore’s 2012 Mobile Future in Focus report found that in 2011, mobile app usage exceeded the growth in mobile browser usage. Another study conducted by Flurry found that mobile app usage has risen to 94 minutes a day compared to 72 minutes per day of web consumption.

At Carbonated, we see ourselves doing a lot of mobile app development in the near future due to this increasing demand. If you’ve recently considered designing a mobile app for your business, there are a number of factors you should consider before jumping into the development process.

It’s important to define what your app will do, who will use it, and what platform you want it to run on. These may seem like simple questions to address, but it’s important to answer them as a starting point for mobile app development. Your mobile app must also provide value. It can do this by offering location-based features, increasing loyalty and engagement through discount or reward systems, or providing an effective solution for a real problem your customers face.

Without the right planning, proper development and user-friendly features, mobile apps can be a real waste of time and money. Before you hop on the mobile bandwagon, it’s essential that you have a good grasp of what’s involved in mobile apps and what your fundamental needs are.

We’re excited about the continued growth of mobile app usage and look forward to spending more time designing and developing in this cutting-edge field. If you have questions about mobile app development or are interested in learning more, just get in touch with us!

It’s hard to ignore the buzz surrounding Pinterest, the newest social networking site on the block. Even if you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, we’re betting some of your friends have grown fond of sharing their inspiring image collages with you through popular social media feeds like Facebook and Twitter.

In case you aren’t entirely familiar with the fastest growing website around, Pinterest works a lot like a virtual scrapbook. Users can create online bulletin boards for different categories such as home décor, wedding planning or favourite recipes. “Pin” images and links can then be “repinned” by other users who have shared tastes or interests. But what does Pinterest really have going for it? And how can it really work for your business?

It’s estimated that unique visitors to pinterest.com increased 429% from Sept to Dec 2011, according to mashable.com, and it’s certainly garnering a lot of attention with the female demographic. In fact, Pinterest hit 10 million U.S. monthly unique visitors faster than any standalone site to date, and the average Pinterest user spends 98 minutes per month on the site, as noted on comScore.

Here’s a few ways you can turn Pinterest into a powerful marketing tool for your business:

Maximize your exposure

If you believe Pinterest doesn’t have what it takes to drive traffic to your retail site or other social media feeds, think again! Pinterest allows you to create an online profile where you can include a website URL to your business site, but more importantly, it supports connections to your other popular social media circles like Facebook and Twitter so you can share content more effectively across all of your marketing platforms.

Increase consumer engagement

By using Pinterest to hold contests, post tutorials, request product feedback or highlight brand personality, you’re guaranteed to boost consumer engagement and interest with a visually appealing brand identity. Who doesn’t love pretty pictures?

Form social connections

Pinterest is a great way to promote communication between your brand and consumer. Make your brand shine and strengthen social connections with your target demographic by creating boards that allow your customers to pin testimonials, case studies, and other ideas or suggestions for your business services or products.

If you haven’t already signed your business up for Pinterest, our advice is that you look into this social media strategy as part of your plan for 2012. Happy “pinning”!

There are a lot of reasons people tune into the Super Bowl. For some, it’s the pulse-pounding action of the game itself. For others, it’s the anticipation of what’s in store for the half-time show. For the rest of us, it’s to watch some of coolest commercials to hit the screens all year.

While most Super Bowl commercials promote car manufacturers and beer, there’s a pretty good selection of commercials promoting Internet companies these days. We won’t lie – we’re pretty happy about this recent trend.

Here are some of our favourite Super Bowl commercials from web-based companies from years passed:

Monster.com – When I grow up (1999)

Google (2010)

E-trade Baby (The E-trade Baby has made Super Bowl commercial appearances for multiple years, here’s one)

LivingSocial (2011)

Teleflora (2011)

Groupon – Save the Money – Whales (2011)

Are there any you would add to this list?

Another year has come to an end and 2011’s technological innovations certainly kept web designers and developers on their toes—mobile became the mainstream, new coding techniques skyrocketed creative design potential, and typography climbed to a whole new level of awesome. So what’s the forecast for 2012? I might not have a crystal ball to consult, but I have a few predictions of what I think 2012 has in store for us. Let’s dig in:

Responsive Web Design

As we’re moving into the digital age, end users are tapping into a variety of technologies to view websites on such as tablets, mobile phones, regular monitors and large/widescreen monitors. With responsive web design, one can create flexible and dynamic website layouts that fit the screen of all of these devices at any resolution. It’s a fairly new practice that started to get hot in 2011, but not a lot of designers have started implementing the technique just yet. Considering the continued growth of mobile and tablet use, I expect that in 2012 this particular trend will really take off.

http://thinkvitamin.com/

More Color and Texture Usage

Minimalistic design really had its heyday in the past, but 2011 celebrated greater attention to detail and the use of unique textures to jazz up white space. Stay tuned for 2012 when this approach is likely to explode onto the web design and development scene. I predict dull colour pallets normally seen in “retro/vintage” design will be ditched in favour of attention-grabbing bright colours and rich textures.

http://www.liptonicetea.pl/

Typography

I know you’re probably thinking “duh”. I must admit, typography is on my list every year, but it’s always a pretty safe bet to include because the variety of web-ready fonts being added every day is mounting and browsers are getting even better at supporting them. It goes without saying that in 2012, this trend is likely to attract even greater popularity in the web design world.

http://www.kccreepfest.com/

BIGGER and Better

With monitor sizes taking on Hulk-like proportions, designers are able to create on a larger scale than ever before. 2012 should see greater use of larger elements, including text, photos and icons. We’re starting to see web design that relies more on visual cues than oodles of content, so expect the trend this year to be large photos paired with more concise copy.

http://2011.festivalmundo.com.br/#inicio

Display Items

Banners, page ribbons, bookmarks or other types of display badges are going to be a top trend for 2012—guaranteed! These items are often used for mobile app and blogging websites, and since tons of free resources are now available on the web, there’s no doubt they’ll be sticking around in 2012.

http://www.wellsriley.com/

What kind of predictions are you making for 2012? What would you like to see? We’d love to hear your ideas!
